Having never raced back to back weekends I had no idea how my body would handle it. My coach and I were careful with the training the week between and have been keeping it really light since for a real hard week in the future. Onto the races...the first race was an Olympic distance race here in Boise, Id. The inagural Quest for the Capital Triathlon. Being an inagural event I was skeptical of how it would pan out. I am friends with the race directors, so put my confidence in them for a great venue. The swim was held in Quinn's Pond and as us locals know in August the water temp here is warm, which means no wetsuit. I was excited to see just what and where my swim fitness was. At the gun I wanted to take out an honest pace in order to gain some valuable time on Adam Wirth. To the first turn I was sitting on the feet of an unfamilar face, at the turn I noticed we had a gap already on the rest of the field. Bingo! I did all I could to stay on those feet the remainder of the swim however she gapped me by about 20seconds. I led out of transiton and enjoyed the company of the lead motorcycle for the first few miles until Adam passed me, I tried for as long as possible to keep him in sight. By the time we got to the hills Adam put some distance on me, my goal was to just ride as hard as I could and keep the gap minimal. After the first three of us were led astray for about 10minutes we were brought back to the intended route. I was frustrated but case in point is to know the course!! Leaving transtion I was a minute down on Adam. I could see him up the road and ran like a madman catching him. I caught Adam and was in the lead by mile 1 thanks to my T6's . I crossed the line being the first winner of Quest for the Capital Triathlon!! A great event overall and enjoyed getting out there with everyone racing.

Stumptown Half-Iron Triathlon

Another inagural race. This race was set up a lot like the Rev3 race in Portland earlier in the year so I thought it would be good to see how I compare against the big dogs. The trip was quick but enjoyable plust the bonus of getting to see an old friend who I have not seen in some time. Race morning came without a hitch and being extremely rested I was more than excited to get out and throw down a fast race. At the swim start there was the normal meet and great and size up who was racing. The elite wave only had a couple people in it so the announcer asked some more of us if we would like to start in the elite wave...uh of course. I noticed Jeff Smith at the start and figured him to be one of the fastest swimmers, therefore I had the goal of staying on his feet. However, I soon realized I was not going to stay there long. For some reason I did not have the swimming arms I had only a week ago. Still not sure why I had a sub-par swim but will not dwell on it and work on the open water swimming. Onto the bike I got a split from super fan Chris Bagg..3min 50secs down....ouch. I said to myself "bike like there is no run!" I also remembered Rick Floyd saying "I can bike way better then what my races have shown and that I should bike fast so that I don't have to rely on a fast run". Well I made no hesitation in putting the hammer down and really lit it up afterburners. I was in sixth place and my goal was to be in first when we hopped off the bike. After the first lap of three I had only made up about 30seconds riding in fourth position. Lap 2 I got another split and could see 3rd place not to far up the road. I put my head down and hammered for 5minutes. I closed the gap and rode to the turn around with him, seeing second place at the turn around made me hungry and I put in a attack to bridge up to him. I made it in second place by the beginning of lap 3 and was 2minutes down on first place. I tried to make up as much time as possible, but on made up about 10secs by the time I started the run. Onto the run I started out running well and making up some time on first place. I knew third place was right behind me and I waited for him to catch me so we could run together and use eachother to catch up to first. We were running together really well and then I hit a bonk like no other. I started to fade and I think he (Chris Ramsey) could smell blood and he put in a surge I could not match. Bugger! I kept battling as much as I could but really faded the last couple miles. It was a well fought podium and finishing in third with the fastest bike split and second fastest run was encouraging that I am well on my way to making a jump to the next level.

Reflecting on the battle

Emmett's Most Excellent Triathlon

Nearly two weeks since my last race so I figured it better be time for a post race report. The day came in went in a blur. This is a local race so all the boys would be out to show their fitness. So I put my game face on and really wanted to give it a go. Ariving to the race site with close to 30mins till race time is one way to make sure you don't stand around loafing. By the time my bike was racked, gear checked, wetsuit on, I ran down to the start for my warm up and before I knew it the gun was going off! My goal was to swim in the front group so I was bound and determined at the start to stick to the feet of the good swimmers around me. We were all pretty bunched up to the turn leaving me optimistic that we would hold the same till the finish. Sure enough the front group of us exited the water all within striking distance. Out of transition and onto the bike. Taking in the scenery of the farms around Emmett. It was not long before my body began reminding me that this is an olympic distance race so really put the hammer down. It has been awhile since the last time I raced this distance and was quickly reminded of how hard one needs to go to stay with the front guys. Coming into t2 I was hoping I remembered my running legs because the cycling legs took a holiday. Quickly donning my T6's and steaming out of transition I starting turning the legs over in hope to contend for the run prime. After about 5k I realized I had only the one gear today and just tried to keep it there. Rick caught me and we ran together for a few k and he opened a gap of about 10secs which he held till the finish...bugger!

All in all a solid day of racing where much was learned! One thing I am realizing in this journey is that it takes time to get good...patience is the key to success.

Thanks for checking in I will leave off with a quote from one of the greats...“It takes a long time to get good” – Scott Molina

Journey up to Idaho City

Being a mountain man at heart there are times when I feel a calling to head up into the hills and breath the fresh mountain air. Which worked out pretty good since my training was a bit lighter than normal. It is always nice to have people we love come and visit even if it is only a couple of days. On one of the days we went to the Old Idaho Penetary and tried to find out if it was truly haunted, all I can conclude was that it would be unbearably hot staying in a cell during summer. Not to mention you would have to really like your bunk mate because things would be real tight in such quarters! Later that same day we strolled down to the river and just enjoyed a lazy summer afternoon in the shade with the river running past.

Here we are hanging with "Honest ABE" who has a lot to do with Idaho by the way.
A great time mom thanks!

Pacific Crest

Pacific Crest is an amazingly beautiful race located in Sun River, Oregon. For a backdrop we have the Cascade Mountain Range, in particular we become like an ant on a hill when we are climbing up Mt. Bachelor on the bike. Second big race of the year for me and I was ready to wrestle with the demons that have haunted me since my last run in a race at Boise 70.3.

Race morning came and knowing that coach wanted me to turn the mind off and just race I tried my best to do such. This race had an elite wave which elite amatuers could join being how the prize purse was only 5 G's, therefore could not be a true professional wave. So I had the opportunity to race in my first "Elite" wave! Exciting!! Kevin Everett and Luke McKenzie decided they would stamp there status of being "Pro" in the swim and took off like missiles. I did my best to hang but was soon in no mans land off their feet, due time I will be there. Sighting on snow capped mountains how could one not be loving this swim? Out of the water and was eager to start the ride with my Blue Triad.

The bike course is amazing. Alpine lakes, rivers, snow covered peaks, smell of pine, and cool crisp mountain air. Climbing up towards the pass at Mt. Bachelor the snow is still piled 10 feet on the sides of the road. Creating the feeling of riding through a refrigerator. After two hours my body started warming up, I finally came around and began racing.

Back into T2 my legs began to come around and feel good, I hopped off the bike and thought to myself "man I am glad my running legs showed up today". Donning my T6's, I started the run in 6th place. I had one more spot to go before I got into the money, so I put my game face on and started to track down the contenders. Mile 2 and my first victim was caught and passed. The next 8 miles were lonely, there was no body to be seen, except the aid stations volunteers every mile or so who were great by the way, (water on the left, electrolytes on the right). At about mile 10 I saw some friends who said 4th place was only about a minute up the road. Shortly afterward I caught of glimpse of him, and by mile 11 he was caught and passed!! With two miles to go I put out my best effort and soaked in the high fives and cheers coming down the finishing chute.

4th place and I am happy to have ended the day on a high note. I ran like I can off the bike and believe the near future will show another step in the right direction towards obtaining my pro liscense.

Thanks to Tim, Mariah, and Abby for providing a place, and a fun filled trip. Boise was out in full force for the racing and cheering. Kevin ended up winning, and Trish Diem took 2nd overall for the women. Felt like a local race, even people I did not even know were cheering for me which was pretty cool, but kind of unusual since they knew my name and I had no idea who they were?

Thanks for checking in, Neil

Stepping Stone Boise 70.3 Race Report

         Hoping my running legs come around!

The first big race of the year took place on June 11th. Boise 70.3 is a home race for me so anxious nerves and energy overwhelmed me the days leading into the race. First and foremost want to send a shout out to God for giving the ability to compete in endurance events, my family, friends, and coach Rebecca Preston with TeamTBB.

Doing my warm up I felt good on the bike and run. I was ready to see how the past 10 weeks training would pay off.

Swim- I felt ok, missed the first little pack in my wave so I was stuck swimming by myself the whole swim which next time I will really try to get on that first pack. The longer I got into the swim the better I felt, which may be do to the cold water. It was 52 degrees!!

Bike- Felt great the whole ride. Right from the get go my legs were ready to put on the gas! I had no idea how fast I was riding it is all off feel just like training no speed or watts. I built into the effort and really felt my strength kick in the second half.

Run- I started off just cruising, in my mind I tried to picture build set I do in training. Hit two miles at just under 6min pace which I felt pretty comfortable, really thought I could build into the run from there then I pulled up with a bit of a stich/cramp in my stomach. I had to walk/jog for a bit, finally coming good with the aid of some coke. I think it was a nutrition thing which I know that through racing more and getting use to how much fluids/calories to take in during the day we can get it figured out.

Overall I am happy with the race. Consistent with 5th best swim, 3rd best bike, and 4th best run, which I know I can run much faster! This is a stepping stone in the direction I want to go, but there is still a lot of work to go. With 2 and 1/2 months of training with Team TBB the results are huge, I am looking forward to putting in the work for the next year and then we can really see the benefits of the program!

Until next time, Cheers!!

Happy Mothers Day

Growing up my brothers and I would anticipate mothers day. Sounds funny I know but we would always go to the local nursery and buy my mom flowers. Not the kind you put on the table in a fancy vase, but flowers that my mom could plant in her garden. Tenderly placing each plant in a desired location to grow. Looking back now I see how much my mom appreciated that small act. Seeing my mom's delight in the small things, reminds me that she is the greatest mom one could ever ask for and although I did not go to the nursery for some perennials I know that my mom will be working in her garden, hopefully reminicing on the past. Now adays our man trips are few and far between, so we try to really take advantage of the time when the opportunity arrises. Even though this trip was all about taking care of training business we still had a share of fun. I had a great time and know that someday in the near future I will have a breakthrough race there. However this year those dreams of stading up on the podium did not come true, which leaves me as an athlete even more hungry to go back and find where I can improve do achieve my dreams. The race: For some reason I did not feel mentally there, it was as if on race day I was just going through the motions, which in big races like this one needs to be operating on all cylinders and I was not. Getting ready in transition I was trying to get mentally prepared to do what I knew physically I am capable of. I had a descent warm up riding to transiton, and running a bit pre race, then it was time to head down to the swim, I hopped in the water and managed about 15 min of good swimming with some fast sprints in there. Knowing that the gun would be going off in a few minutes I got out of the water and visualized my plan of attack for the swim. Gun goes off and what a chaos it was, swimming with hundreds of others trying to get out to the first buoy as quickly as possible. Normally in the swim I try to tag onto the draft of someone in front of me however, on this day I just missed the opportunity and was hung between two groups. Out of the water in 23minutes, a bit off my time but up near the front of the pack, into T2 I passed a few people. Now onto the bike and within seconds the infamous Lynch Hill climb. Legs were not happy that right off the bat were being asked to hammer up a hill steeper than steep. Nonetheless we made it to the top passing a couple more dudes. Out onto the main section of the bike course I was finding my legs and trying to gain as much time as I could. Some friends yelled out I was in 13th at about mile 20 on the bike. Passed one more dude and then I was passed by another dude who seemed to be shot out of a rocket. Still in 13th heading off the bike and onto the run. This is where I shine and put a lot of hurt into my legs. The first 3k of the 10k run seemed to fly past and I was running just where I wanted to be right around 10.5 minutes for the first 3k. From about 4k to 7k there is a pretty good climb, this is where I was hoping to really hammer out a fast tempo to gain back some time from those ahead of me. However when I tried to go my legs had other plans and really wanted to just keep a steady pace. Usually I find that I can work the hills, however on this day they really worked me. Finally, my form came back during the last 3k of the race, unfortunately for me it was too late to gain a whole lot of time. Running the last 1k of the race is something I will not soon forget how the crowds seem to carry you into the finish. 1000's of people yelling and encouraging you to run fast keeps the mind positive no matter what the race outcome is. I am happy with my finish, and have been an athlete long enough to know that somedays we have it and somedays we dont. I believe that my greatest race is in the future, until then keep on keepin. Thanks for all who showed there support throughout this race and thanks as well for reading. It is also used to refer to the character trait of being steadfast. This is how Mr. Wikipedia defines it. The past couple of days I have humbly been reminded of such, (Thanks Mom, and Rick). How often do we rush into the unknown or even the known with great expectation of what we want and how we want it to work out, failing to be patient and enjoying the journey? At the same time we forget to be patient in our trials and steadfastly work toward a dream. For example today during a swim Time Trial Rick showed me how effectively patience can work in the form of ENDURANCE, I learned today that in order to go fast one must slow down. As an endurance athlete I have learned that to be good at this sport of Triathlon/Duathlon it takes a long time, (PATIENCE) plays a vital role in this sport not only in the development but also in the training and racing that we take part in each and everyday. So my encouragement is this, to take forth each day with a purpose and patience seeing each ambition to the end. "But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control." One of the greatest things in this life is coming across new people and getting to know them a bit. This weekend I met and made a few new friends and must say their positive attitudes led me to a new way of thinking and sparked up a passion to get out and live!! Carrying over to my last workout for the weekend, which was to be a long ride. 3+ hours in the saddle and just a hair under 70 miles. Totally a confidence boosting day, as I comfortably became one with my Time Trial Steed, BlueTriad. The ride took me through farmland and sunny country sides of which reminded me of growing up on the prairie in North Idaho. It is good to think back to the simple days ever so often. Ahh EPICNESS!!

Beat Pete!!

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 104px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_z8hlv1IjnqI/S8TKEojqRSI/AAAAAAAAAEY/OrBY6TSr_z8/s320/beat+pete.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5459710829235160354" />
A friend recently asked me to do a video interview for the school newspaper (Arbiter) here at BSU, check it out!!

http://vimeo.com/10811841

Triathlon Season Started!!

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 246px; height: 320px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_z8hlv1IjnqI/S8PTA0SYHaI/AAAAAAAAAEI/u7FFQs1ert4/s320/Iron+War.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5459439184292355490" />
The past couple of weeks have been a blur. There are times in our lives when it seems that everything goes by way to fast. And then there are times when everything seems to go by way to slow. Like right now sitting in the Library at BSU writing a paper, man why can't I just get done? Well perhaps writing here is not helping. Back to the blur, two weeks ago was spring break. Like most college goers I fled from school at the first opportunity, however unlike most college goers my fleeing did not involve tropical weather and copious amounts of alcohol and headaches. Rather, I headed north to compete in the first race of the season and visit family. The first race was just that, the first race where one has the great opportunity to really test those legs that have been inactive all winter, and blow out a little rust that built up in the four months of non racing. The warm up was over and less than a minute till the gun went off, perfect. That is the way it should be, get done warming up and bam ready to rock. So I did and went through mile one in 5:20 right on que. Needless to say my biking legs were not as ambitious as the running legs and starting the second run of the duathlon I was in third place. The last mile to go and me and another dude battled back and forth for the second spot, with 200 to go I dropped the hammer and beat out my opponent by 5 seconds!! Not a bad way to start off the race season. After a week of frigid temperatures in CDA I was ready to get back to Boise and prepare for my next event the Boise World Championships, also known as the Spring Sprint. This is a serious race here in Boise and Kevin Everett has dominated it for the past I dont know how many years. With a somewhat disappointing swim my aim was to really go for it on the bike and run. Doing so I ended up biking into 7th position, and finally running my way into 5th place where 3rd, 4th, and 5th were separated by less than a minute. I ended up reaching my goal on both the bike and the run, and know that as the season progresses I will be in better shape and ready to take on the races to come. A great way to start the season these past couple of weeks!! I am greatly looking forward to racing Wildflower.

LIFE and IPOD

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 256px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_z8hlv1IjnqI/S6Yla0-CtYI/AAAAAAAAAEA/kGIYsbcwSbk/s320/ipod_people_blue.gif" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5451085541804258690" />
What does life and an ipod have in common? Well this is what I am about to tell you. You see life is like an ipod in the sense that we can download or upload what we want, just as we can delete what we do not want. In other words we get to choose what it is we want to think about and what it is we want to be influenced by. Just like we choose what it is we download to are niffty little device, so it is in our minds. What do you constantly think about and are those thoughts good? Remember it is what we continually think, that we become. Make sure the stuff you are downloading in your life is good.

Been A Long Time

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 230px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_z8hlv1IjnqI/S5WzuiUBwdI/AAAAAAAAAD4/M39TJpVbe-8/s320/jesus-wept-large.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5446456936440644050" />
Seriously it has been awhile since a post from this neck of the woods. The definition of motivation is to give reason, incentive, enthusiasm, or interest that causes a specific action or certain behavior. Motivation is present in every life function. Simple acts such as eating are motivated by hunger. Education is motivated by desire for knowledge. Motivators can be anything from reward to coercion. Basically no situation is without some form of motivation. As far as being motivated to swim, bike, run at such committed levels there are many things that bring me motivation, a few include; inspiring words, someone telling me I cannot, desire to be better, other athletes, pictures, movies, my brothers fighting for our freedom, simply motivation is found when we seek it. What ever it may be that brings you motivation remember it, write it down, post it up, or watch. Check out this video perhaps it may inspire some motivation.
http://articlescollections.com/awesome-versus-sports-montage-music-by-explosions-in-the-sky/

Mix it Up!!!

How often in life do we get set in our ways and do the same thing hour after hour, day after day, week after week, month after month, and year after year? For some there is comfort in knowing what is in store day to day, but it is in the unknown where we find the greatest adventure. With this in mind I set off to mix up the monotony of training and did a little altitude run and bike. Saturday morning found me up a Bogus Basin setting off for a little run on the snowshoe and cross-country skiing trails. So for 45 minutes a friend and I ran/jogged around on such trails to mix up our training from the same old same old, this helps keep training exciting and fun, instead of doing the same thing over and over. Next, my friend dropped me off(thanks Mariah) so that I could spend a few hours on the mounain bike, navigating over new terrain and finding my way back home in Boise. In the pictures you can see the fun on my face along with the powerbar and fruit and nut bar mom made (thanks mom), with a minor scare from what I thought was a rattlesnake. Next time there seems to be too much "same old: in your life "mix it up" with something new, that way when someone asks "what have you been up to?" Your response will go from "Oh just the same old stuff", to .................

SIMPLICITY

Simplicity is being simple. It is a property, condition, or quality which things can be judged to have, according to wikipedia. This past weekend was spent up in beautiful Stanley, Id. Devoting time to work more on my skills of the simplistic lifestyle: Wake up eat, bike, run, swim, repeat. Pretty much each day was devoted to organizing my thoughts and simplistically living completely stress free. Of course it is simple to live so simply in such an awe inspiring setting, as pictures show. Living the dream! When there are no distractions in our lives it seems as though we are set free to live how we were intended to live since the begining of time. Simply, just living. Taking notice each and everyday to the beauty which surrounds me puts my mind at ease and helps me to recalibrate so to speak. Inspiring one to let go of doubt, cast away all fears and just go for that which we dream.

Choices and Decisions

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 213px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_z8hlv1IjnqI/SnCieJcZfbI/AAAAAAAAACo/85Q3n4IBb2g/s320/tj4028_110207_113926_278902.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5363965795013066162" />
Throughout life we as human beings are faced with CHOICES AND DECISIONS. The difference being CHOICES we make everday, including what to wear or not wear for that matter, what to eat, when to wake up, whether to shower, shave, brush your teeth, and so on. DECISIONS on the other hand are necessarily not made everyday, but are always life changing and may include; who to marry, what dreams to pursue, what job to work, to have kids or not, where to live, get my drift. You see decisions effect our life as a whole, and although choices may play some role in the decision more than likely choices do not effect us as much. Now that we have made such clear go and make the right choice, or decision, or whatever you choose, you decide! Check out these lyrics from Skinred

At first you don't succeed
Tried and tried again
Worked your hands to bleed
Don’t give up my friendWell in this game called life you got to keep on trying
Don’t make no body push you down and give you pure problem
OI! Life it is for living not for aggravation
When their getting under your skin and trying to cause you tension
You tell them, inside this flesh nuff ah we jusa suffer
And influences they will come take we over
1 think in life I and I must remember
Stand up for something and you’ll hear the oppressor singing

You got to make up your mind
Life, Choices and Decisions
You got to make up your mind
Life, Choices and Decisions
Where do we go there are so many signs
Life, Choices and Decisions
You got to make up your mind
Life, Choices and Decisions

Well well at first you don’t smoke weed but now you’re hooked on smack
You look back over your life and you wish you could go back
Rewind reject it and start it again
You know you wouldn’t end up with this juxtaposition
Right! Inside this flesh nuff ah we jusa suffer
And influences they will come take we over
1 think in life I and I must remember
Stand up for something and you’ll hear the oppressor singing

To follow or to lead
Or do you just pretend?
To pause or to proceed
The choice is yours my friend

Which way do you go? Where you gunner go? I do not know! You see,
Life is one big road with lots of signs, surely you’ll find
You got to make up your mind to face rality all the time
Many ah problem many ah joy
Never you try to take life for a toy
Some doing good lord some doing bad
All of these choices are driving me
Mad, So mad, driving me mad, driving me mad, driving me mad, driving me mad

Life, Choices and Decisions, Life, Choices and Decisions
Life, Choices and Decisions
Life life life life, choose life

Caged Inside

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 250px; height: 206px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_z8hlv1IjnqI/SmdyrQ62o6I/AAAAAAAAAB4/M24-07jD4BE/s320/caged_lion22.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5361379969009623970" />
Running past the local zoo the other morning, the sound of a lions roar echoed from inside. This sent my mind a drift into the wonders of what it would be like to be an animal caged, trapped in not able to get out and live a free life. Reflecting upon such I realized that we as human beings live life very much inside of a cage at times. Roaring we may, but nothing can make us fell the freedom of being free. Although we do not necessarily have bars surrounding our environment other things take there places. Deadlines, bills, we all have an agenda, and at times they seem to be the weight of the world on our shoulders. You see there is that which will set us free and we have the decision each and everyday to live life in such a manner. Do not let this world cage you in, go out and live today!!

Give it your All!!

How often in Life do we go through the motions and just do enough to get by? A difficult yet important question we must ask ourselves from time to time. Did I do my best today? When we wake up in the morning do we go with intention? Questions that seem to haunt my mind today. Live with a purpose and pursue your dreams I say, let knowbody keep you from that which you want for there are all to many people in this life who seem to tell us what we cannot do, yet very few who will encourage us to go forth into the unknown and pursue that which we dare to dream. Ask yourself are you giving life all you got or are you just getting through the days? For when the end of the day comes can we look back and say that all was spent and we gave it our all to get across that line giving the day purpose.

I can blog Now!!
